Sook Ching
Sook Ching, meaning a purge or purification, represented the attempt by the Chinese to remove any anti-Japanese sentiments in the Chinese population of Singapore.
Shortly after the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese in 1942, the Kempeitai (the Japanese military police) assembled all Chinese males at designated mass-screening centres, one of which was Jalan Besar - here, even women and children were ordered to register themselves.
In all, 242 victims of Sook Ching who were screened at Jalan Besar were massacred at Changi Beach.
