Ever wondered how Jalan Besar came about? Jalan Besar means BIG road in Malay and this wide road spans across many interesting places (: These places include the famous Jalan Besar Stadium, New World and the former swamp land it used to be! A part of Jalan Besar used to be a swamp land thriving with many animals which are now only seen at Sungei Buloh! These animals include flying ducks, snipe, fish, mud lobsters and multi coloured snakes. But this part of Jalan Besar was eventually reclaimed to make way for New World ( read the previous entries to find out more about New World :D ).

New World (cont'd)
In the 1930s, the Shaw Organisation made a 50% joint venture with Ong Sam Leong Ltd, the original owner of New World. Eventually the Shaw Organisation bought out Ong Sam Leong Ltd and became the owner of both Jalan Besar's New World and the Great World at Kim Seng Road. With the advent of World War Two, business at the New World halted temporarily until the Shaws were instucted by the Japanese to re-open the park under military controls. Unlike the Great World which was sold in 1978, the New World continued its operations until the mid-1980s.

New World
New World (or New World Park) was a prominent entertainment venue in Jalan Besar, attracting visitors ranging from labourers to European merchants with its exciting entertainment programmes. First opened in 1923, New World occupied a large area bounded by Kitchener Road and Serangoon Road and offered to its visitors thrilling boxing and wrestling matches, variety shows and a small cabaret featuring Filipino artistes. Teochew, Hokkien and Malay operas were also a common sight and New World was often described as a popular source of entertainment up to the 1950s. The picture above shows the now defunct gateway of New World, photographed in 2007.

Holy Trinity Church
The Anglican Chinese Churches in Singapore began with the St Andrew's Church Mission in 1856. These Foochow and Hokkien speaking services sarted in 1902 with services being held initially at St Peter's Church at Stamford Road. The site at St Peter's Church was eventually reclaimed by the government in 1937 for the building of the former National Library and the church then moved to its current location at the junction of Home Road and Hamilton, establishing itself as the Holy Trinity Church in 1941. With its unique Chinese Art Deco architecture, the Holy Trinity Church is a beautiful sight to behold. Services are conducted through the week in English, Mandarin and Tagalog.

Kueh at Syed Alwi Road
Kueh is the Malay (and also Hokkien) term for a variety of snacks that can be either sweet or savoury and is often considered the Asian equivalent of the cakes and pastries found in the West. Often kuehs are steamed instead of baked (as is the case for pastries), making them fundamentally distinct from their Western counterparts in terms of texture and taste. This shop at Syed Alwi road makes and sells more than 20 varieties of kueh, including kueh made by the Nonya, Malay and Indonesian communities. |
