New World (cont'd)
In the 1930s, the Shaw Organisation made a 50% joint venture with Ong Sam Leong Ltd, the original owner of New World. Eventually the Shaw Organisation bought out Ong Sam Leong Ltd and became the owner of both Jalan Besar's New World and the Great World at Kim Seng Road.
With the advent of World War Two, business at the New World halted temporarily until the Shaws were instucted by the Japanese to re-open the park under military controls. Unlike the Great World which was sold in 1978, the New World continued its operations until the mid-1980s.
