New World
New World (or New World Park) was a prominent entertainment venue in Jalan Besar, attracting visitors ranging from labourers to European merchants with its exciting entertainment programmes.
First opened in 1923, New World occupied a large area bounded by Kitchener Road and Serangoon Road and offered to its visitors thrilling boxing and wrestling matches, variety shows and a small cabaret featuring Filipino artistes. Teochew, Hokkien and Malay operas were also a common sight and New World was often described as a popular source of entertainment up to the 1950s.
The picture above shows the now defunct gateway of New World, photographed in 2007.
